67 Minutes

July 18 is internationally recognized as Nelson Mandela day. It also happens to be Madiba’s 95 birthday, which he is miraculously able to celebrate. Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for peace, justice, democracy and freedom. For this, Mandela day is celebrated with 67 minutes of community service. It is not a day off of work, but instead a time to do meaningful work in the community. Mandela day is to inspire. It is a time to reflect on the future, and on continuing to create a better world. I spent my 67 minutes today educating a new generation of South Africans at Sakwingomso Educare through SAEP. As I played, colored, hula-hooped, and crafted with the young township children, I realized how far this country has come under Mandela’s watchful eye. These children will face immense struggles in their lives, but their future is brighter than it has ever been. Happy 95 birthday Madiba! May your legacy of the rainbow nation continue for generations, and may you find peace. “Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day.”
